It is often perceived that the white line behind a jet liner is smoke but, we are wrong, because it is just water vapour! In a jet engine, when the combustion of fuel takes place, the oxygen in the air combines with hydrogen in the fuel, vaporised water is formed. When the vapour rushes out it, condenses to form a cloudlike tail. When the atmosphere is hot, the vapour disappears quickly than when compared to cold weather, because it takes more time to dissolve, therefore the white smoke is visible for a long time. One must have noticed that the smoke starts meters away from the plane. This is because the vapour takes time to condense, till then the plane moves further ahead. During exhibitions, planes fly in different formations in which colours are released to form dazzling designs in the air.
